Benefits of R2R laser patterning of printed solar cells

  

Laser scribing offers several advantages when compared to lane definition by slot die printing, including, among others:

  1. - Better aesthetical fill factor by reducing the width of the landing zone of the interconnect.
  2. - Simplification of the coating process since no special alignment between coated layers is required (single lane coating)
  3. - Higher geometrical fill factor due to elimination of one insulator and the possibility of digital alignment of individual structures with respect to insulator.
  4. - Yield improvement due to lower de-wetting and miss-alignment problems between layers.
  5. - Design flexibility due to digital patterning (no need of custom tooling like shims)

Traditional lane definition by slot die coating demands the preparation of specific tooling for each design and layer, requires precise alignment between printed layers and limits the achievable fill factor (active area/total area).

 Laser ablation can be used to selectively remove some of the printed layers of the solar modules to perform the electrical isolation of adjacent cells and to expose the bottom electrode to be contacted by the silver for the serial interconnection.
